I really like the spyderco lava http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=237 but it is a bit out of my price range at ~$80 I'm looking for a cheaper alternative, but am a bit picky. I know of the big companies; cold steel, spyderco, benchmade, kershaw, gerber. Are there any other quality knife makers that I am forgetting? What companies in your opinions make the best overall practical, camping and heavy duty knives? Best bang for your buck? Cheapest but well made? Best service and warranty? The blade will hold up to constant use and/or is easy to sharpen or the company will do it for you free/cheap? I have two kershaws and I like them. Cheap and reliable and I have not yet to have any problems with them. One is a Ken Onion chive (great little pocket knife). I am looking for something along the lines of a legal pocket knife in california ( I believe the blade has to be under 2 3/4") and something no bigger than say a six inch blade. Folding or not.

Hi, I'm looking for a razor sharp pocket knife that I wont need to sharpen for a while even after some rough use, so it needs to hold an edge well. I'm hoping mostly to use it for EDC (Every Day Carry) but it needs to stand up to some really thick rope, and the small possibility it will be used for self-defense in a bad situation. It does not have to be big, but not absolutely teeny (not under 1 inch, please). It also cannot be an assisted opener or automatic opener, because everything that opens by itself or with a small flick/gravity is very illegal here in Maine. I'd love for it to lock open, but locking closed isn't a must! Hoping for something under 200, and maybe even under 100 if it's possible. Thanks for your help guys. Also: I've checked out tons of popular companies, and my favourites are definitely Spyderco, Cold Steel, Buck, and Leatherman. Any recommendations from any company are accepted though.

I'm 26, i don't ever intend to have to use such a thing but it could have helped me in the past, i live in a rough area and i refuse to be a prisoner in my apartment after dark, if i need smokes at 2 am, i'm going to go get them regardless of who is out roaming the streets. Finding the laws and not wading through a textbook of other irrelevant stuff is next to impossible so maybe somebody can help me. In my neighborhood and elsewhere throughout my life i have been robbed before (3 times in one year once) and occasionally beaten by individuals and groups of up to 6 people, i have had a gun pulled on me and have been threatened with knives on 2 occasions as well and i believe in the right to self defense but don't want to go to jail. I already know what types of knives are allowed and that's not an issue, i went with something that could seriously incapacitate somebody but is not likely to kill them (slashing as opposed to stabbing, a spyderco delica 4). In what situations is it ok to use a knife for self defense? If somebody far bigger then me attacks me or tries to rob me but is armed only with his fists can i use it if i feel i need to? If there are a group of people assaulting me does that make it ok? Is a knife only ok if the person assaulting you has a knife as well? What if he has some sort of blunt weapon? I just need to know what I am and am not allowed to do.
Resolved Question: Best tactical folder under $50?
I've been carrying cheap folding knives for a while now, but they only seem to last a year or so before something falls apart. Usually the blade gets loose, liner lock doesn't lock well, or the handle comes apart. I decided this time to spend more than $20 on a knife and try and find a nice one. Here's the criteria, Sturdy: something that will handle several years of use and abuse, being flicked open and closed several times a day. One handed opening and closing, preferably with thumb stud, and smooth enough that it'll flick out without much effort. My previous knives have all been liner locks with thumb studs. Something around 3 inches along, sweet looking, but not so much that people give you looks of fear when you flick it open to cut a box at work. Under $50. Want to spend enough to get a good knife, but not so much that I'll be afraid to use it. Suggestions? I've been looking around at Buck, Kershaw, or maybe a Spyderco so far. I mainly use it for light duty work, cutting open boxes, rope, cable ties, plastic, but I want something that'll still stand up to the more heavy duty uses as well. My last knife I broke the tip off trying to punch through some thick cardboard stuck in a machine at work (work in a retail warehouse). I'm also a mountain biker who goes camping a lot, so I've used my knife to do everything from cut apart a bike tire to scrape cactus out of my arm. (I also go fishing, but I'm careful to not get it wet so I'm not too worried about corrosion.)

No I don't mean that I'm a cutter. I mean that I like to buy and carry knives. I carry a knife daily as a tool to open boxes and peel apples etc. I however seem to be on an endless quest for the perfect knife. I know this sounds irrational and silly to most people but I don't see it as harmful. I collect pocket knives made by Benchmade and Spyderco. You can see these knives at Benchmade.com and Spyderco.com. I don't constantly purchase knives to the point where I don't have money for food or mortgage or things like that. I just really like the craftsmanship of a good knife. And I don't consider the junk that is sold on QVC or ShopAtHome to be good quality. It's junk. Is this a bad thing? I mean I somewhat can justify it by saying, well at least I'm not out drinking or at strip clubs or whatever, but I'm not sure if that is right or not. I have a butterfly knife. It is a Spyderfly from Spyderco. The latch that locks the knife closed no longer springs back when i squeeze the knife for quick opening. The spring is there but its not doing anything. I think it got bent somehow. Is there a way to repair this and if so what tools will I require. Is there a place to buy replacement springs? It is illegal to carry a balisong knife of any kind. However ownership of a balisong knife is permitted as long as it does not leave private property. This is not something that can be superglued. It would be illegal for me to sell this blade to anyone in california, therefor I can not pawn it. To those of you who said to contact Spyderco I am already trying that and awaiting a response. Thank you everyone for your help, Silence It is a balisong knife. The Spring is for the latch that keeps the knife together. It has no function in opening the blade. It does fit the description of switchblade per california state law. A switchblade is considered any blade that can be opened with one hand according to california.
